Disease Comparison - Describe and Evaluate The Distinctions in Disease Manifestations in Individuals/Populations for Epidemic/Pandemic Actions
In this project you will use real data to compare and contrast an historical disease (see table below for assigned disease) with COVID- 19 for the content listed below for Units 3-4. You will use primary literature and other reputable sources to compile this information in detail. You will create a SINGLE static (ie- it isn’t an item that can be changed after submission) digital product to represent this work (Prezi, Powerpoint, digital book, digital poster, etc.). For each disease (COVID-19 and the assigned disease), you will determine the following items, then you will compare/contrast the two diseases. Be specific, detailed, and thorough in your analysis. *You will need to provide a works cited list on the last page with appropriate citations within your text/images, or you will receive a 0 for the assignment for an academic integrity violation.
You will submit in TWO locations.
- Canvas Assignment - This is your project grade in the “Test” category. HERE
- Canvas Discussion Board - Peer review and disease dialog for the project as a separate grade from the project.
- Genetics (compare and contrast details of your assigned item and COVID-19)
- Morphology & Structure
- Sequence/Genetic distinctions for strain(s)
- As a tool in this effort, you may BLAST the strain for the sequence(s), but you may also use primary literature to discern strain information within your assigned item and COVID-19
- Epidemiology of Pathogen (compare and contrast details of your assigned item and COVID-19)
- For the last outbreak, list the population(s) affected, location(s) of infection, and timeframes for studying the epidemic(s)
- Explain the transmission of the pathogen
- Pathogenicity of Pathogen (compare and contrast details of your assigned item and COVID-19)
- Explain the portal(s) of entry and exit, adherence to the host, pathogen load for invasion, potential evasion from the host, and the specific effect(s) on the host
- Immune Response by Host (specific for this pathogen) (compare and contrast details of your assigned item and COVID-19)
- Innate
- Adaptive
- Therapeutics, Design and Development (Drugs and Vaccines specific for this pathogen) (compare and contrast details of your assigned item and COVID-19)
- Type(s) of vaccines available and drug classes utilized
- Specificity & Sensitivity (Effectiveness) of Each therapeutic
- Solubility (ie- how does the therapeutic enter the system- oral, injection, etc.- for functionality? What about the design ensures this?)
- Target-Host Effect (How do you ensure the therapeutic only targets the pathogen? Why are host cells not affected?)
- Public Health Campaign (compare and contrast details of your assigned item and COVID-19)
- Explain the methods currently used to educate the public about this pathogen.
- Explain any modifications to enhance these initiatives to meet the goal of understanding.
