Reminders for State Board Practical Exam

It is extremely important to make sure you sanitize, disinfect and work in a safe manner during your exam. Failure to do so can result in failure of the exam

State Board Examiner Meeting Notes:

1. After removing gloves, be sure to close the ziplock baggie every time

2. Thermal Curl- Must place the comb between the curling iron and the scalp during the thermal curl

3. Clean the skin behind the ear with a cotton ball with cleanser and dry the skin with a piece of cotton before the patch test

Make sure the tip of the bottle never touches anything

4. Test the wax on your wrist before waxing with a clean wooden stick

Apply wax to the wrist

Remove with a waxing strip

Throw wooden stick and waxing strip in the trash

Hold the skin taut/ brace the skin when tweezing and waxing

5. Predisposition test less than 1inch wide Don't fold the foil, spray with water, wipe off with a paper towel

6. Wait for the examiner to prompt you to saturate for chemical waving

Wait to put on gloves and cotton until the examiner is with you individually

7. Partings for the chemical wave must be the size of the rod- Watch that they aren't too wide

8. When setting up for Client 2- Move everything away- Wipe the entire area with disinfectant, wipe all universal supplies with disinfectant,

9. Make sure the drape doesn't touch the skin all the way around

10. You must have gloves on when you use the disinfecting wipes

11. If your hand goes inside any of the bags (Items to be disinfected, Soiled Linens, Trash) you have to sanitize

General Reminders

Sanitize your hands at the very beginning of each task and the very end of each task
Sanitize if you touch your face, touch up your clothing, touch your hair, touch the floor, touch any of the bags, push up your glasses, or any other potential break-in sanitation
Your duffel bag is considered your dry sanitizer. It MUST be zipped at all times except for the times you are setting up supplies. If it unzipped and during your exam and you aren’t removing supplies, all the steps you are demonstrating are considered wrong because you are working in a non-sanitizing manner. If you accidentally leave it open: Sanitize your hands, zip it up, sanitize your hands and go back to work. Then you will be working sanitary and the tasks you are demonstrating are now sanitary.

Disinfecting Wipes/ Pink CaviWipes

Set up for Client 1:

After you sanitize your hands, set up your bags, put on gloves and wipe your station, chair and manikin stand with a disinfecting wipe then finish the set-up.

Use a disinfecting wipe to disinfect the cord and the rod handle make sure you have gloves on
Use a disinfecting wipe to disinfect your shears or razor if you drop them make sure you have gloves on
Set up for Client 2:make sure you have gloves on- Wipe your station, chair and manikin stand.

Use one wipe to wipe all your Universal Supplies- extra items bag, your water bottle, first aid kit, bag of gloves, disinfection wipes and then your station area counter make sure you have gloves on

Wipe your station area counter after the blood exposure task and also if you accidentally cut yourself during the haircut task make sure you have gloves on
Final Clean up :make sure you have gloves on
Put all items in the appropriate bag (Waste, Items to be disinfected, or soiled linens) and the last thing you will do is wipe your cleared station area with a disinfecting wipe make sure you have gloves on

Cloth Towels

If you choose to use one during Client 1 set-up to lay undersupplies
Around Manikin’s neck between the cape and skin during Client 1 Set up
If you choose to use one during Client 2 set up to lay undersupplies
Requires 2 towels: Around the Manikin’s neck between the cape and skin during Client 2 Set up and around the Manikin’s neck over the drape
Towel for Chemical drips during Chemical Wave
Towel to cover the manikin’s hair during eyebrow tweeze and wax

Paper Towels

To clean up the floor if cholesterol, water or any other substance is dripped.
To wipe the manikin’s face of excess cholesterol, water, and the excess hair on your manikin’s face after your haircut
To wipe the color from the preliminary strand test

Barrier Cream-THIS IS MULTUSE DON"T THROW IT AWAY AFTER HAIRCOLOR _ YOU WILL NEED IT AGAIN FOR RELAXER

Use around the ear and nape of the color retouch area before you begin applying the retouch
Use around the ear and nape for the virgin relaxer

General Reminders

Remember to step back when you are finished at the end of each task
I suggest clasping your hands together in front or behind you to keep you from touching something and becoming unsanitary
No talking unless directly spoken to by an examiner or proctor
Do not watch other candidates during your exam this could be considered cheating and you will be dismissed
