Required Class Materials
| School-issued laptop computer | Textbooks/Handouts | Calculator |
| Composition note book or spiral bound notebook | Two pocket document holder/folders | Pens and #2 Pencils |
We will be using Canvas as an online platform this year to house materials, resources, practice activities, and assignments/assessments. Because many of the activities and materials for this course will be accessed and turned in electronically through Canvas, students should plan to bring their school-issued laptop with them to class every day.
Class Participation
This is a progressive class that requires you to build on previously learned material. This is particularly applicable to hands-on assignments and projects. To be successful, you must participate and apply maximum effort in all class activities and assignments. Please arrive to class each day prepared and ready to focus on learning. Don't be afraid to ask questions. We are all learning new things and your fellow students will appreciate the questions you ask because they are likely wondering the same thing! Talk to me sooner rather than later if you are struggling with any of the content.
Grading/Missed Work
Grades are posted in the PWCS official grading portal (Hub). You are able to review your grades through Student-Vue. Preliminary grades/assessment feedback is provided in Canvas. Your grade will primarily be based on your class participation as we are a hands-on class. The more you attempt, the better your grade, the more you
do not participate, the worse your grade. The projects that you work on will be a project grade and be weighted accordingly. Test and quizzes will
typically be at the end of each unit:
Class Participation (including lab clean-up) 50%
Projects 30%
Assignments 10%
Tests and Quizzes 10%
Letter Grades are determined using PWCS grading scales as found here
You are provided two days for each missed day to make up missed work due to absences. A zero is recorded in the Hub until the assignment is received and assessed.
Retake Procedures
Retakes are a privilege, not a right at CD Hylton High School. Students may be granted a retake of quizzes, tests, and other assignments according to the following criteria.
- To be able to retake a test, quiz, or assignment, the original work must have been submitted before the end of the unit being completed or have been given a pre-arranged extension. Once the unit of study has finished there will not be any allowed retakes for that unit.
- Any work not submitted will be assigned "NHI" (Not Handed In) in the gradebook. If the work has not been made up by the end of the unit, the NHI will stay in the gradebook. If the NHI work has been made up within the unit of study then the NHI will be replaced with the new grade.
- Each student will be allowed one retake for any grade under 80%, as 80% has been identified as the lowest level of Mastery and each student must complete a remediation session before that retake can happen.
- The retake assessment may not be in the same format, version or length as the original assessment and will focus on the standards or materials not mastered.
- Students must complete their retake within 2 weeks of the assessments results, and complete the review and reteaching opportunities that will be provided before a retake may happen.
- The grade earned on the retake assessment will not be averaged with the first assessment grade. The highest score will be recorded in the grade book.
Academic Integrity
Academic violations consist of any student action that, through misrepresentation or other means, compromises the integrity of the learning process for one or more students. Academic violations are considered behavioral issues and could result in disciplinary action from the student’s administrator. Additionally, the student will not receive credit for the work in question and will be required to resubmit the assignment or an equivalent assignment. Teacher may place a zero or NHI in the gradebook as a place holder until the assignment has been completed.
Students are responsible for neither giving nor receiving assistance (written, oral or otherwise) on any assignment to be graded as the work of a single individual. Students are responsible for giving due recognition of sources from which material is quoted, summarized, or paraphrased. This includes persons who have provided assistance.
- First Offense: Student warning, possible reduction in grade or a zero on the assignments
- Second Offense: Parent notification and a zero on assignments.
- Third Offense: Administrative referral, parent notification and a zero on assignments.
Attendance
- Attendance will be taken daily.
- The teacher can modify attendance for up to 7 days.
- Students with excused absences will have an extension of the number of days missed plus one day.
- Students with unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up any work until that unexcused absence becomes excused. The assignment will be marked as missing which does not affect the student grade. After two weeks from date of absence the grade will be changed to a “NHI” which carries a grade of 0%
- It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missing assignments caused by an absence.
- During in person schooling, a tardy qualifies as any time after the bell rings.
Safety and Discipline in this Course
You are expected to follow all school safety and Occupational and Safety Administration (OSHA) regulations throughout the course. These will be covered thoroughly prior to your use of hand and power tools. You must complete all safety training and pass the safety exams with a 90 percent prior to being allowed to use tools and equipment in the laboratory, even if you have already earned your OSHA10 card. You and your parents will be required to sign a safety acknowledgement form.
The work, tools, and equipment in this class have the potential to cause very serious injuries. It is vital that all students work to maintain a safe environment. Students are expected to behave as an adult and act in a responsible manner while in the Hylton CTE department. Although machine tools require students to pass each safety test with an A, the Hylton High school CTE department has posted general class rules that must be followed by all students.
Students who choose not to cooperate with these rules and expectations will be dealt with according to the discretion of the instructor. Methods of discipline include warnings, correspondence with parent/guardian, additional lab responsibilities, and/or referral to the office. All safety issues will be dealt with swiftly and sternly. There will be ZERO tolerance for unsafe behaviors.
ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE SIGNED SAFETY FORM FOR Hylton C.T.E. BEFORE ANY CLASS ACTIVITY CAN BEGIN. THIS FORM IS MANDATORY.

Cell Phones
Per PWCS Cell Phone and Wireless communication device usage guidelines:
9-12 Grade Students
- Personal wireless communication devices, including earbuds, must be silenced, and stored away during all instructional periods.
- Dual-purpose watches are allowed, but wireless/cellular features must be turned off during instructional times (e.g., must be in airplane mode).
- Personal wireless communication devices and one earbud are permitted during lunchtimes and during hallway passing times but are prohibited in all locker rooms and restrooms.
- Cell phones and wireless communication devices may be used on school buses provided the device does not distract the driver, compromise safety, or violate the Prohibited Content and Use for All Students provisions detailed below.
Prohibited Content and Use for All Students
Students are not allowed to create, access, or share content that is incompatible with a K-12 educational environment while on school property, including school buses, or at school-sponsored events regardless of location. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Content that is obscene, contains profanity, or that involves or threatens illegal acts.
- Content that bullies, harasses, threatens, or degrades others is strictly prohibited including the use of artificial intelligence to impersonate others.
- Videotaping misconduct is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary actions.
- Use of cell phones and wireless communication devices in restrooms or locker rooms is strictly prohibited. Photographing or videotaping other students in a state of undress in these or other areas of the school will result in discipline and may result in a referral to law enforcement.
- Use of cell phones and wireless communication devices to cheat or in ways that violate the school division’s acceptable use policy.
Safety and Privacy
Emergency: Students will be permitted to use a phone in the main office to contact a parent/guardian during the school day should the need arise. If a personal wireless communication device is needed to contact a parent/guardian as part of a reunification following an emergency, staff will provide direction when approved to do so.
Privacy and Respect: Respecting the privacy of others is emphasized; taking photos or videos of classmates, peers, and staff is strictly prohibited on school property, including school buses, or while involved in school-related activities without prior approval of an administrator or staff member.
Expectations
- Students must comply with staff directives and the provisions of this policy to avoid disruption of the educational environment, or they may be subject to disciplinary actions.
- Parents/guardians should not contact their student on their personal wireless communication devices during the school day. Parents/guardians should contact the office with urgent messages for students and the office will facilitate communication.
- Students and families/guardians will receive the cell phone and wireless communication devices guidelines at the beginning of the school year and must read the notice. A student and/or parent’s failure to read the guidelines does not exempt a student from the responsibility to follow these guidelines.
- The student is responsible for adhering to these guidelines and always securing their belongings. Classes and/or instruction will not be stopped to resolve or search for a lost personal wireless communication device.
Final Thoughts
This career and technical education course is a work-based learning focused program. I expect all students to participate in class activities and assignments; to ask questions and to ask for help. I expect all students to try to broaden their horizons and learn something new. I expect all students to have fun learning the art of woodworking and cabinetmaking. I expect all students to participate in shop cleanup. I expect all students to always behave in a respectful manner and follow the PWCS Code of Behavior (https://codeofbehavior.pwcs.edu/ ). I expect all students to treat each other and anyone in the cabinetry lab with respect. I expect all students to follow all safety procedures. If we practice safety and have respect for each other, then we will all have a great time in this class!
